I teach anyone who shares the passion for cello (or violin, or chamber music). I tend to attract many adults who always wanted to play the cello, but postponed it, and finally decided its now or never. Similarly, I teach a number of adults who played through adolescence, but quit, and now want to return to playing. Ive been teaching since I was a teen-ager, and fortunately, multiple decades later, Im still cherishing every student, every moment of music making. Read More

I aim to tailor my lesson plans to each students unique goals. The methods I use differ based on each persons aspirations and learning habits. I believe that the cello can be a beneficial addition to anyones life, whether it is being played for recreation/therapy, to explore and enjoy great music, or to challenge oneself and build discipline through rigorous practice. I like to use the first few Suzuki and Schroeder books for complete beginners to introduce basic bowing and intonation concepts while building confidence with the cello. Read More

You can get away with Just fifteen minutes of practice each day and you will still see improvement, but only if it is consistent. For those that aren't necessarily interested in going down that road, that's ok! In the end it's about what is fulfilling to you. I am always more than happy to make our time more exploratory and free form. This is especially important with very young students, though I'd encourage this attitude with all ages. Read More

During the first lesson, I have a short discussion with the student to see what their goals are. I also ask what about music interests them. I then ask them to perform anything of their choice to assess their ability level (if applicable). After that, I tell them what immediately needs to be addressed and how this will work with their longterm goal. Then, based on their progress, we set benchmark goals that are adjusted according to their pace. Read More

I have also spent my summers teaching at such music festivals as Luzerne Music Center, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and NYSSSA School of Orchestral Studies. My duties included teaching students aged 9-19 private lessons, coaching up to three chamber ensembles daily, conducting orchestral sectionals, and rehearsing from within the orchestra. My summer students there have been concerto competition winners, were granted opportunities to perform in the student showcase and for donor events, sat as section leaders in the orchestra, and performed in masterclass for cellists of the Philadelphia Orchestra and for the Johannes Quartet. I grew up with music all around me. Both of my parents play classical instruments like the cello and violin. My childhood home was filled with sounds of classical and chamber music. Therefore, it is not so surprising that I too chose to move in the direction of music. I went to Bard College with no clear intent on what to do, but I continued to play in orchestras and chamber music groups, and knew that no matter which degree I chose, that I would always love playing the cello. For beginner students I always like to start from the Hal Leanords Essential Elements. It is a great way to start a student off and provides them the fundamentals they need to improve. After that I like to mix in a combination of scales and etudes to continue their technical training while introducing solo pieces to give them something more interesting to play. Starting from a strong foundation will allow the student to progress much faster and helps keep them from getting discouraged. Read More
