Having grown up in a musical family (with the only exception being my dad), I have learned first hand what it takes to be a successful teacher. Although I am in no way a master teacher, I have taught primarily younger individuals ranging from 10-13. My goal is never to rush the pupil, as easy as that may be at times. This only encourages greater frustration and ultimately failure down the road. Read More

I strive to cultivate in all my students a lasting love for the art of music in whatever form it manifests in them. Finding what about the instrument is inspiring to the student is paramount to keeping both of us engaged in the process. As a teacher I challenge my students to explore the joy of making music with their instrument and to chase that which cultivates joy in their playing. Read More

I've been teaching the cello and music to individuals and ensembles for ten years. During my undergraduate degree, I taught with the Virginia Tech String Project. From conducting, coaching sectionals, and helping students with technique during rehearsals, I gained many of the teaching methods and practices I keep today. I also co-taught string ensembles at the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute. In these camps, teachers and students together had a week to program, practice, and perform a concert. I center the way I teach technique around what "feels" good to a student, especially older students who have already started, to make sure that we are able to prevent and respond to injuries. So, I start with stretching and will frequently refer back to exercises that are meant to integrate physical ease into playing. Aside from that, I try to balance a consistent routine/expectation of things I want to cover (asking for things a week in advance, always playing a scale at the start of the lesson, etc), while also meeting a student where they are at on the day. All students are encouraged to find level-appropriate pieces (that don't have to be classical!) they wish to play, and I will do my best to help them achieve their request and can provide suggestions as well. I try to incorporate songs and tunes outside of the classical genre into my assignments to keep students' practice sessions fun, and for students interested in learning non-classical cello, we can work together to create a curriculum that fits your needs. Depending on the level of the student and what they are looking to achieve through the lessons I would use a few different methods. I like to use guitar books if at all possible for beginners because its a great place to start. The fundamentals are where you have to start to build a scaffolding and practice books are great for doing this. I also like to use songs and tunes as a way of teaching different concepts. Read More
