I have also enjoyed working in the Memphis (Tennessee) City Schools whenever I am in my hometown, as well as working in the Bayonne, NJ and other schools to teach in classrooms whenever possible. As a private instructor, I believe that it's important for a child to think of their lessons as a special time that is set aside for their music/cello and I always traveled to my own teacher's studio and that was our cello place for lessons, so I think it is important for my students/parents to travel to my studio as well. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and "I Can Read Music" to get acquainted with the basic techniques of the instrument and note reading. It is always more fun to play with others, so I typically start playing duets with students as early as possible. For older and more advanced students, I begin with scales and etudes suited towards their needs, followed by a solo or concerto piece for cello, and then end the lesson with a duet or time to work on orchestral music, improvising, or any fun piece that the students request.
