Teaching for 12 years and playing for 18 years has really inspired me to cater to every age, and the student’s personal goals and their particular culture as there are no limitations to my style. As a tutor, I assigned homework regularly and kept students accountable by checking for completion and accuracy. When it comes to learning how to play an instrument, the importance of practicing regularly on one's own cannot be emphasized enough. My cello instruction is separated by levels and books. Level 0-1 is in Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books 1 and 2. Level 1-2 is Rick Mooney's Position Pieces Book 1, as well as sheet music and books outside of that method book. Level 2-3 is Rick Mooney's Position Pieces Book 2 and sheet music, and 3+ will be Rick Mooney's Thumb Position books. For students interested in studying stringed instruments, I have found that the Suzuki method is a very effective curriculum for young children who cannot yet read well, yet engaging enough for older students if supplemented with note-reading and technique exercises. Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Robert Frost's All for Strings are two other proven methods that work well for almost any age. Young piano students do very well with Alfred's Basic Piano Course or Faber Piano Adventures methods, and Bastien and Alfred both have methods for adults that seem to promote quick learning.
