I've found that keeping an open mind about methods is really helpful when dealing with beginning students, young and old. I've tought from various method series including Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Emily Wright's A Modern Cellist's Manual, Muller Rusch, and more. While I'm not a certifited Suzuki instructor, I do teach from the Suzuki method when students or parents request it. I am a 32 year old musician. I grew up playing the cello, starting at age 5. I picked up other instruments as I grew older and eventually went to a conservatory. I have performed in a wide variety of contexts throughout my life including professional symphonies and popular music ensembles. I also use innovative methods to teach all instruments. I encourage my students to select their own repertoire. It is also encourage to perform at least 3 times a year in recitals.
