My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 6 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students since then. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy cello playing and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

I truly appreciate all efforts to produce sound. I am never bored or impatient! My approach to my students is informal, unpressured and encouraging. I play with my students all the time, creating occasions for performance and giving my students contexts for taking pride in their musical achievements. I feel that playing should not be an isolating experience but something to be shared. I organize groups every year: beginner and advanced kids; beginner, intermediate and advanced adults. Read More

I work in partner with students who are enrolled in public school lessons, and incorporate their school's method book (i.e. Essential Elements 2000 or similar), as well as rudimentary exercises and pieces appropriate for their level. I am a strong advocate of Kreutzer etudes, Hrimaly scales, and Suzuki pieces as learning tools. I guide my instruction based around the students' ability, needs, and goals. I believe that learning music is a constant conversation between student, teacher, and any others involved (parents, guardians, siblings, school music teacher), and like to keep communication open with weekly notes and homework assignments recorded in a music notebook. When teaching children, I typically start out with Suzuki cello repertoire. I am also very serious about teaching physical concepts so that the student is able to express themselves through the instrument I believe that there are certain technical principles that must be communicated and I do my absolute best to make sure that the student understands them. As students become more advanced I then introduce repertoire that suits them and that I believe they will enjoy. Read More

Even while getting my Bachelor and Master’s degrees at The Juilliard School, I knew that I wanted to explore more kinds of music. Strong fundamentals are necessary for every student, but from there every student should be able to explore the music that inspires them! I’ve spent over 13 years fusing my classical training with other genres: pop, rock, funk, EDM, folk, world, jazz, you name it. With my violin/cello duo, ARKAI, I’m on a mission to expand the possibilities of what a cello can do. Read More
