When teaching young children and beginners, I use the Suzuki method. I have been certified in pre-book 1 and book 1 of the Suzuki method by the legendary educator Tanya Carey. For older/more advanced students, I use a series of methods taught to me by the renowned cellist and pedagogue Robert Jesselson, whose teachings have lead me to where I am today, and have produced cellists of the highest quality that can be found among the worlds greatest orchestras and institutions. I believe in a goal-oriented mindset; sometimes I like to help students by creating practice guidelines for them to follow in between lessons. I also enjoy giving listening recommendations and the conversations that ensue - by discovering what a student likes or dislikes, I can have a clearer sense of his or her musical personality. I began teaching as an undergraduate student at the University of South Carolina. I worked in a teacher-training program called the String Project, where I had the opportunity to observe and assist string teachers in a group setting. From there I gained private students in the Columbia, SC area and eventually hired as a Teaching Assistant where I taught a cello practicum for music education students and private cello at the university.
