I then usually work on scales, technique and etudes, and then work on any major repertoir that may have been assigned. I then finish by setting goals for the week, and answering any further questions. I a very upbeat and engaging teacher, and I am not afraid to adress problems head on. I find it important to both acknowledge accomplishments and use effective criticizm. I like to establish a friendly and fun atmosphere where the student feels at ease, but always help my students set goals, and hold them to standards of excellence. I also recognize and value that importance of a student enjoying lessons, and that may sometimes mean that s/he wishes to learn and play music not covered by the books and materials we use for lessons; thus, I encourage students to share with me any such music they want to work on, and we then incorporate it into our lessons. I take a split approach with students working on basics such as scales/arpeggios along with repertoire so students can develop multiple skills at one time. I approach technique for both cello and piano as the art of releasing tension in the body while achieving the desired sound of the instrument.
