I use humor and my own experiences to first establish a caring environment in which the student can be comfortable. Once that connection is established, I like to find out the students interests and make sure a personal goal is set that we can achieve together. There has to be something exciting the student can achieve in order to develop self-motivation. I employ a number of tactics to stimulate self-expression and problem solving skills, as independent work and practice is crucial in any musician's journey. Read More
Instruments: Violin
My experience in teaching violin started in 2001 as an violin instructor at Music House Inc. Over the years I had been teaching groups as well as private sessions with students from public schools from all over the Chicago area. Learning music is a part of developing mental abilities and perception skills that help the student in areas of interests other then strictly musical: from appreciation of the world around them to skills about thinking of the self in relation to their surroundings. At home during the summers, I was a clarinet instructor at Lyons Township High School’s summer band programs for junior high students. When I moved to Chicago in 2015 to begin my graduate studies at DePaul, I continued teaching through Musika and DePaul’s Community Music Division. I’m currently preparing to begin my third year on faculty at The People’s Music School, where I teach private lessons, group classes, music theory, and chamber music to students ranging from elementary beginners to advanced high schoolers at multiple sites throughout Chicago. Seeing a student progress week-by-week is an exubertant experience. I encourage all of my students to be honest about what makes them inspired to play music and from there we work on capturing all of the components of that source of inspiration. What is so effective about this approach is that it blends both discipline and humanism. By critically examining our strengths and weaknesses in a musical context, we become better able to do the same in other areas of life. Read More

Though I have taught on and off for the last fifteen years, my most formative experience as a teacher was my time teaching at School of Rock in 2015. I taught bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals, and ensemble musicianship to students ranging in age from 6 to 60. I enjoyed using the music they loved in order to teach the fundamentals of music, just as I learned the fundamentals from the music I love. Read More

My first teaching experience dates back to High School when I had the opportunity to coach elementary orchestra students. As a student at University of Colorado at Boulder and DePaul University, I completed String Pedagogy courses which covered all the different elements of teaching from how to manage a private studio to instructing your students. Currently, I teach a group of ten kindergartners at Skinner West Elementary School. This has been the most rewarding and challenging part of my teaching career thus far. Read More
