For younger students, I will be using Suzuki Cello School to guide instruction. When students have successfully completed the Suzuki books, I will introduce them to pieces that would be suitable for a recital performance. For adults, I will base instruction off of Suzuki but also find material that will keep the learning process fun and enjoyable. I am a member of the Symphonicity Orchestra in Virginia Beach, VA and the Georgia Philharmonic Orchestra in Atlanta, GA. I have studied under the direction of The Hampton Roads Chamber Players and The Bay Youth Orchestra in Norfolk, VA. Currently performs several times a year at The Biltmore House in Asheville, NC and several other events in the Atlanta Metro area. My cello instruction is separated by levels and books. Level 0-1 is in Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books 1 and 2. Level 1-2 is Rick Mooney's Position Pieces Book 1, as well as sheet music and books outside of that method book. Level 2-3 is Rick Mooney's Position Pieces Book 2 and sheet music, and 3+ will be Rick Mooney's Thumb Position books. We can come up with a plan to help you define your goals, a practice plan to meet your needs, and I always encourage students to perform, enter auditions/competitions, and/or recitals, open mic nights, school ensembles, All State, Solo/Ensemble, out of school ensembles. Students will have many opportunities to perform, participate in workshops where we focus on certain techniques, certain types of music (i.e. fiddle, mariachi, jazz), learn improvisation, and meet guest artists. I generally will start off students with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements books 1 and 2. Once the fundamentals from those books have been understood, I will start the students on repertoire that is appropriate for their level. I generally will start off on Classical music, but if the student has a request I will help them work on that song unless I know that their skill level isn't at the point where they can perform that song. I teach the basics using a combination of methods, customizing lessons to each student's skill level, ability level, and interest (classical/folk/modern). For beginning students I suggest using the Suzuki Method, or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once each student is ready to move beyond the fundamentals, I find exercises and solos to best fit and improve their skill level for recital performances, competitions, strings class/orchestra, or other activities. I believe lessons should be fun. Yes, learning music can and should be challenging. But it also needs to be fun. I am a very performance-oriented teacher. So, once I get to know a student, we begin preparing to perform. If we are having fun while we work, we don't even realize we are working.
