I do not introduce music notation usually until the fifth or sixth lesson. I believe that kids learn faster when they beginning learning by call and response or like many call imitation. I supplement my live performances income with teaching because I love to teach and see my students' love of the bass increase with each lesson. I like to tell my students to practice everyday even if it is only for 10 minutes, because it gets them into a routine. Rewind to the year 1996. I was in a local music store looking at the bulletin board looking for a band/bandmates. One index card caught my attention in particular: "Looking for someone to teach my 15 year old son guitar, can pay $20.00 an hour." I took the card and raced home and called her.
