For students of all ages, I start with a small book focusing on the essential elements of the instrument while teaching them something fun and recognizable. As basic techniques are acquired and musical concepts are grasped, I tailor the lesson to what the students long term goals are. An example would be a 12 year old on violin wants to excel in his or her orchestra program, so I pick certain pieces, books, and techniques to teach that will help them accomplish this. Read More

I am a firm believer in building the curriculum around the student since everyone learns differently and not everyone has the same goals. I start with an assessment to see where their skills are. I do this in 3 major categories: tempo, reading, rudiments. From there I can see what areas need to be focused on first so we can perfect the basics and have a strong foundation to build off of. For beginning students who have no experience on their instrument, I usually spend a fair chunk of time working on basic technique using books like the Essential Elements series or Greg Horne's similar books for folk instruments. I usually combine the book material with other songs/pieces relevant to each student's interests. For more advanced students, I usually find a mix of repetoire relevant to their interests and technical exercises for them to refine and develop technique. Read More

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Read More

For beginning and young students, we always start with fundamental concepts - producing a good sound, developing a sense of rhythm and pulse, building music reading skills, and fostering good practice habits. Once these skills have been developed, we progess to working solo repertoire and ensemble music. As student age and ability levels increase, I like to give the student increased input in the direction of study. No matter what, we keep things interesting and engaging, and fun! Read More

An instructor once asked me what could I do in music today. That is my question to every student. Maybe it's a new scale, riff/lick/, chord, or variation of something already learned. By the end of the lesson our goal will be to have learned one more thing that we didn't know the day before and have fun doing it. Read More

Each student gets a personalized lesson plan built around their musical preferences and playing style. I view our lessons as a collaboration rather than a lecture. Tell me where you would like to end up and I will assemble an action plan to get you there. Do you just want to strum some simple songs or learn music theory and how to improvise? Would you like to write your own songs or just play other people's music note for note? Read More
