For beginning and young students, we always start with fundamental concepts - producing a good sound, developing a sense of rhythm and pulse, building music reading skills, and fostering good practice habits. Once these skills have been developed, we progess to working solo repertoire and ensemble music. As student age and ability levels increase, I like to give the student increased input in the direction of study. No matter what, we keep things interesting and engaging, and fun! Read More

I have been playing music all my life and am a Bass Player at heart. I have been teaching for 3 years and am skilled in teaching bass (all levels), guitar (beginner to intermediate), and ukulele (all levels). Although I did not attend music school, I have been playing bass for 12 years and have been professional for the past 9 years. I create custom lesson plans depending on each student's musical background, stylistic preference, as well as age. For children I usually like to teach out of Hal Leonard's Guitar Method 1 and occasionally include songs they like/know as a reward for good work. For adults, it varies depending on their experience level and interests. When I teach, I try to teach not only how to physically play certain parts, but also how to think about music-- how the guitar player arrived playing that, why it works, and how to adopt similar things into one's own playing. Mel Bay's first 2 bass books were my first but there are many to choose from. Starting slow is imperative for the beginner. This prevents injury because bass is a physically demanding instrument at times. I teach warm ups, breathing, posture, hand and arm positions, stretches, and cool downs. Practicing with a metronome must be a daily routine for the evolving bassist because they are the beat no matter what style. Read More

My teaching experience didn't really begin until a few years ago. I began "shadowing" other teachers that I knew who founded The Music Bus Rocks, a local business that focuses on teaching young musicians-to-be, and I immediately became hooked with the process of teaching something that I loved. My experience has mostly been with kids and young adults, but I always believe that no one is too old to learn an instrument. Read More
