My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Read More

While I do teach students to read music and teach the theory behind tunes and compositions that we learn, I think that the MOST important element in anyone's pursuit of musical proficiency lay in the ability to connect what one hears to what one plays. Ear training therefore is a large component. I do use the time honored texts by Hal Leonard and Alfred publications or some from Mel Bay and those from Jay Traylor as well as many others such as the Real Book and Greg Fishman texts. Read More

I'm an Austin, TX-born and based composer and multi-instrumentalist. Initially self-taught, I went on to study guitar with John Dearman (Los Angeles Guitar Quartet), Molly Miller (Jason Mraz, Black Eyed Peas), Thomas Echols, Dragos Ilie (Austin Guitar Quartet), and Adam Holzman at The Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin where I earned my BM. I am fluent in styles ranging from classical, jazz, and rock. Read More

I continue to develop my skills as a musician in a very goal-oriented manner so I like to utilize that aspect of learning with my teaching. Learning an instrument can take a lot of practice and at times can seem like you don't even see a flicker of light at the end of a tunnel. Because of this, I find it very effective to keep focusing on daily, weekly and monthly goals. Read More

I began teaching private lessons and ensemble rehearsals in 1999, having since taught everything from elementary music and concert band to marching band and college-level drum corps. I love it all, as it's all about sharing the positive experience of performance and excellence with the next generation of musicians. In addition to teaching instrumental skills and technique, I also enjoy coaching music theory and composition, and often encourage students to bring in their own compositions to review or perform. Each student gets a personalized lesson plan built around their musical preferences and playing style. I view our lessons as a collaboration rather than a lecture. Tell me where you would like to end up and I will assemble an action plan to get you there. Do you just want to strum some simple songs or learn music theory and how to improvise? Would you like to write your own songs or just play other people's music note for note? Read More
