Depending on the students interest and needs I will typically introduce my beginner students with some scales and etudes from Simandl's 30 etudes book. As well Simandl Book one is a wonderful book to introduce the positions on the bass and has many helpful exercises inside. I'm a believer in the Simandl method and the etudes in particular are a wonderful way to learn the one and outs of especially orchestral bass playing. Read More

I am very focused when teaching but I try not to bore the student with repetitive exercises, varying the material constantly, depending on the student. Some students are more focused than others and they're able to endure greater amounts of effort into a single task. In the beginning there is a kind of audition to determine wether the student will follow through a theoretical way of teaching, by using musical terminology, or a more intuitive kind, by using tablature and listening. Nothing makes me happier than a satisifed student who can play better than I could at their age! Everyone has different expectations; some want to become proficient, while others want to become virtuosos, and I frame my lessons around the student's goals. The student is never talked down to or berated, and always encouraged; music is hard enough without negative comments. I encourage students to listen, listen, and listen some more to music, and also to read as much as they can about music. Read More

My curriculum varies significantly depending upon the experience/age/aptitude goals of the student. For example, a self-taught adult that aspires to play blues or classic rock cover tunes in a "garage band" type of situation doesn't really need to spend much time if any learning to read music. This calls for a more "show tell" approach. Conversely, a 5-year old beginner should learn to read as a matter of course. Read More

My method involves a two part approach - one is to teach proficiency with basics (reading and playing music). The other is to learn what music is, and how to keep yourself interested, progressing and that is by creating, modifying, improvising and composing. I believe everyone should dedicate at least part of their time with music to creativity. My methods also teach proficiency as the means to an end - creating great music. Read More

I have been steadily teaching private lessons since I was at Berklee, nearly 10 years ago. I almost always have taught lessons at my own studio where students come to me because that always seems to be the most conducive environment for learning and getting inspired. I've taught complete beginners at the toddler age, and even retired people in their 70s. I enjoy teaching because each student has different needs, different interests, and most importantly digest and internalize new information differently. Read More
