The most important thing for me as a teacher is to see my students having fun, and really enjoying learning their instrument. I want to see them be passionate about getting better because they’re excited about what’s coming next. By learning about the students goals, and also learning about their musical taste and the kinds of music that inspire them, I can create a lesson plan that totally dedicated to each individual student so that they get the most out of their lesson, and so that I get them closer to their goal. I started taking private music lessons at age 7 and never stopped! From piano, to flute, and eventually to electric bass and upright bass. Supplemented by music programs through my schooling, I progressed rapidly on upright bass, starting at age 15, and graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance. Starting in high school I began teaching students as young as 6 and as old as 65, providing in-home guitar and bass lessons. Throughout college I maintained an upright bass studio on Long Island, New York. Read More

I make sure that all of my students are getting what they want out of their lessons and the instrument that they are learning in general. My philosophy is that if a student isn't enjoying their lessons then I am not doing my job to the fullest potential. While they are learning the music they love, I make sure that they are gaining knowledge in music theory, as well as improving their technique and repertoire. Read More

What I have found works best with semi-slow but significant results is the idea of 'planting seeds'. I describe this concept quite regularly with my students, and what I mean by it is that we will often talk about important musical ideas and simply make the student aware of what's happening. They may not totally understand it right away, but the seed is planted. We start off planting many seeds and sometimes the same seed multiple times. Read More

I began teaching music at the age of sixteen, teaching students not much younger than me about a wide variety of subjects like music theory, rock electric bass, composition, classical upright bass, and jazz improvisation. While still in high school I was the assistant conductor for my schools string orchestra and ran a small jazz ensemble at the Richmond Youth Jazz Guild. Since coming to college I have continued to teach students in Philadelphia as well as in Amsterdam for a brief time, giving lessons on avant-garde improvisation and double bass technique. Read More

I tend to start beginners off with a typical book, usually by Mel Bay or Hal Leonard. I find these books to provide a good basis for music reading and building the required skill set to master their instrument. In addition to those materials, I find music through various on-line sites and from my inventory that students are interested in playing and compliments their abilities. For my adult students, I curtail the lessons to focus on the songs they want to play and understand their goals for playing at this stage in their life. Read More
