I have been teaching private lessons for about 15 years, as well as camps and workshops. I have served as a clinician and instructor at Drumline camps and with Orchestra. I created the Percussive Arts Institute of Ruston to bring music education to an underserved community and taught around 100 students in an after-school program. For beginning students, I always start with technique and posture, as improper technique can be catastrophic to your playing down the line. From there we'll cover the basics, such as chord shapes, strumming patterns, and scales. On top of that, each student will receive a "riff of the week", a guitar riff from a song that is in line with their particular music tastes. For students interested in classical guitar, I like using Christopher Parkening's guitar method; it contains a great deal of useful information and diagrams, as well as a great selection of beginner pieces.
