My methods vary as I cater towards the individual and his/her respective needs and wants. Some of the methods and resources I draw from include the Suzuki Method, Effortless Mastery, and the philosophy of Music As A Language. Music is a language and I aim to teach it like one to the best of my ability. If I had to put it into one sentence, I would say that my overall personal goal and philosophy as a teacher is to teach myself out of a job. Read More

I've touched on this briefly above, but, my main focus in teaching a student is always to help them find their own musical voice. For beginners this means, not only helping them learn the rudiments and basics of music, but also exposing them to various styles and approaches they may not otherwise encounter. Usually, this will lead a student to a level of inspiration where they see the learning of a musical instrument as a lifetime commitment and a journey that is constantly exciting and demanding. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has started to grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I do try to maintain a balance of classical music, modern music, and music theory. Read More

I have used many different methods over the years and will supplement any method book to meet the individual needs of the student. My preferred method for young students is the FJH Harris Young Beginner's Guitar Method series. For older students I tend to use either Mel Bay or Hal Leonard methods to teach the fundamentals and then add onto them with whatever suits the student best. For advanced students I prefer the William Leavitt methods from Berklee University Press, which will be a challenge for anyone! Read More

My students get a strong base in theory, technique, and repertoire...usually focused on identified goals and outcomes. As students grow in ability and age, I engage their interests more so their instruction is more fulfilling. I use a unique approach to practice (I call the "nitty-gritty") with lots of fun (I call "music recreation") are techniques I use to keep students motivated. There is W-O-R-K to music. I will keep the focus on the accomplishment so that work may become ethic that lasts a lifetime. Read More
