I've always found that my students who seem to have the most fun are the ones who progress the fastest, so my primary method is to approach lessons with material that students are interested in. I try to keep things fun and interesting by doing things such as incorporating a student's favorite music into a lesson. It's important for a student to practice regularly with discipline and focus. However based on my experience, nothing propels a student forward faster than the happiness and satisfaction gained from 'nailing' a new lick or figuring out a cool new trick. Read More

Im an experienced and accomplished musician, and I love sharing my love of music with students. Ive greatly enjoyed many opportunities to perform and teach music over the years. Some of my greatest experiences have included touring with bands I idolized growing up, writing music and seeing it all the way through to recording and publishing, and seeing students glowing at recitals after playing their favorite song or classical piece. I like to work with students toward their goals. Setting achievable goals with the student and guiding them as they accomplish the goals. My teaching style is to mentor and coach students so they enjoy their time playing music as well as see their progress. Helping each student with the individual challenges the encounter is a priority, and every student is unique. I always take time to find out what inspires the student and tailor the lessons and repertoire so they enjoy the music they are working on. Read More

Typically, I begin with regimented learning. For guitar students, I use Hal Leonards Guitar Method 1. For voice students, I teach basic breathing exercises and fun, sustainable and memorable warm-ups. From there, I begin to prep them for their first solo performances. I offer studio-wide performance opportunities for new and experienced students to show off their skills! As they progress, I teach to their interests and needs. Some students may be in high school prepping for Solo and Ensemble, or All-State Chorus auditions, or even college auditions. Read More

First I need to know the type of music a student likes. Then I access their level and put together a plan to make them progress by teaching them a combination of; - techniques they need to know and master - exercises to help develop those techniques - songs based on their level and music taste - theory to understand the songwriting style - songwriting exercises to develop their artist side I also recommend music and videos, talk about gear, road experience, and anything else music related a student might be interested in. I'm originally from Iowa where I grew up on a farm, eventually starting trombone in 3rd grade when my cousin gave me his old horn. After having a successful high school career I attended Iowa State University and earned a Bachelors of Music in trombone performance. Playing trombone has given me many wonderful opportunities in my life such as performing with the Boston Brass and Dallas Brass, performing in Europe three separate times, playing in the Southeast Trombone Symposium, and playing in many other bands, orchestras, and festivals.
