For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. The first lesson i assess the student's ability - whether they can play, read music, and what kind of music they like. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their level. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

As mentioned above, I first began teaching guitar and piano during my college years. Also, I have taught music and English as a Second Language in North Carolina Public Schools, and guitar classes in community colleges. My instruction has included beginning to advanced elements of playing the guitar and music theory as it relates to the study of guitar. Additional areas of study included: different genres of music; playing rhythms of different song styles; understanding chord diagrams & reading tablature; and developing improvisation skills by learning how chords fit in a musical key, and relative scales. If a student has something specific they want to work on and are focused on that, I will guide them along, helping them with technique, feel, or anything else. However, if what they want is more broad, (e.g. they want to be a better musician in a certain genre), then I will take a more hands-on approach. For example, to help them improve on playing within a certain genre, I would give them transcriptions from the musicians in that genre, but also have them choose their own musicians to transcribe in that genre. For classical guitar students I use Aaron Shearer's Learning the Classic Guitar Volume 2.
