Hello, everyone! My name is Dr. John T. I have been teaching private voice lessons since 1995. I've been at it for awhile now, and have been loving the journey, for sure. I earned my Bachelor's and Masters in Music from New Mexico State University in 1995 and 1997, respectively. I then earned my Doctorate in Music in Voice Performance from the University of Memphis in 2003. I have been teaching since 1998. I love making music fun for my students, while requiring students to learn fundamentals such as music theory and vocal health. Teaching has been part of my life for over 17 years and I hope to continue for at least that many more. I believe music is for everybody and that each individual can improve and learn if they care and make an honest effort. For voice, I tend to start with vocal conditioning, breath work, and easy pop, Disney, and musical theatre repertoire. For piano, I love using Alfred's Basic Piano Library to start, but I am flexible with books and resources to meet the student's needs. For ukulele, I start with learning basic chords and learning to play easy songs For guitar, I follow the Guitar for Kids book to learn basic chords and notes, then move towards sight playing, and playing songs with different strumming patterns. For beginner students I start with the basic for both piano and voice. For voice we start with breathing, pitch, and starting a healthy techinque and proper places to sing from. For piano I follow the Alfred's serious and begin with music theory as well. Once my students advance we begin with new solo repertoire and more advance theory and sight reading.
