I am a dedicated musician and teacher beginning my fifth year in Portland. My background is multi-disciplinary: on top of my musical coursework I hold degrees in poetry and language. I am a songwriter as well as an instrumentalist and composer. I believe creativity and originality are very valuable parts of musical expression that sometimes get overlooked! I have more than three years experience playing in local bands, and I am well-versed in the Portland music scene (though I continue to add to my knowledge!) Read More

I'm a musician first and foremost. This means that it is not my 'job', it is my life! The first concert that I produced was when I was 16 years old, and it featured the legendary jazz clarinetist Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd. Since that time, I have been performing, conducting, producing concerts, composing music and teaching students. I have performed with a wide variety of classical and jazz and pop musicians: from The Brubeck Brothers, Diane Schuur, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Melissa Manchester; to the Oregon String Quartet and Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra. I am a driven and passionate instructor who focuses on students' artistic and personal growth as musicians. I began my musical journey as a singer, moving towards piano and guitar throughout my formative years. In high school, I performed as a choral singer, musical theatre artist, and as a pianist for both jazz groups and worship settings. While an undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, I studied tenor voice with renowned operatist John De Haan and piano performance with Jamaican pianist Paul Shaw. I believe that every student is different, and that is important to understand each student’s passions and interests. It is important to find out how each student learns, and to motivate him or her to improve, grow, and be passionate about music. I do not want to only teach the notes on the page; I want to instill a lifelong love of music and a basic knowledge of music theory. Learning the goals and aspirations of each of my students is very important to me, as I know that performing music should be about joy and self expression. Read More

The curriculum that I use varies according to the various orchestral instruments, singing or piano, and of course according to the levels of ability. I work with many different technique books and workbooks to teach music notation and reading.Within 3-6 months, my students will be reading notes, understanding rhythms both complex and simple, and playing and singing anything from classical to Pop to Broadway and even writing and recording (I am a recording producer as well)their own songs, if they choose! Growing up with multiple educators in my family has had a huge impact on my life as a volunteer in classrooms. My volunteer experience began when I was in fifth grade, and has continued throughout all of my education experience at Concordia. As I kept growing into a stronger individual, I discovered that the age group I wanted to work with also grew older with me. Working in multiple classrooms throughout my life has only strengthened my resolve to be a teacher because of the communities I have discovered through volunteering. Read More
