For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school. Because everyone learns differently, I teach from a technique I've developed which I refer to as the blank slate method. Though I do utilize workbooks for their very informative and easy to understand nature, I prefer to teach each student based on what they know or what comes naturally to them. This involves you the student, your instrument, and a pen and paper. For beginner students who are children, we work together to learn a simple song so that they can feel a sense of accomplishment and be further motivated to continue their studies. Read More

For children who are beginning Piano students, I start with Piano Adventures - The Basic Piano Method: Primer Level. If the opportunity arises for a performance or a recital, we will either choose material from the book or from music that is appropriate for their learning level. I also teach different methods of piano playing, such as reading chord charts, so that students can play their favorite tunes and sing along. Read More
Instruments: Voice
I focus on the voice first - not just repertoire, not just impending auditions or competitions. Building the voice - not just the performance to come - is an approach I have found to yield strong technique that can carry students far past any immediate need. Building range, teaching the function and physiology of the vocal anatomy (moreso as students age), and bringing students to understand their voice as an extension of their heart, mind, and body are all simple goals I have for each student. Again, my teaching will stick to the motto of my own voice teacher, "Let me do the thinking for you!" If we work on it in lessons, and the student works on it in practice, the next step is to let go and trust that they've done the work and I will adjust if needed. The most important thing is for the student to feel comfortable and sing with no effort or push! Read More
