Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I like to go slow at first and see how things go lesson by lesson. I never like to challenge my students too much in the beginning because it can be rather frustrating to continue learning music. I also believe theory is very important and will ALWAYS include this in my teaching. Read More

I have taught music for most of my adult life. I have taught classes as well as group and private lessons for brass instruments, voice, beginning piano and guitar. I have been doing more private lessons now that I am retired and have taught a variety of students of different ages and levels. I like to find out what a student's personal and musical goals are early on and then focus the lessons on achieving those goals. Read More

I've been teaching private lessons for 2 years; first starting with a few students from the college. Recently have sung with RICCO (performing works such as Carmina Burana). I have been in many shows, such as Into the Woods (Cinderella's Prince), Brundebar (the baker), HMS Pinafore (Captain Cochran), and Gatsby (Nick Carraway). I have also played saxophone with a few collegiate groups, as well as Music directed "Rock of Ages Jr.", and most recently a rolling performance group, Assemglee. Read More

For beginning piano students I use a combination of Piano Adventures curriculum and Suzuki piano method. I like using Piano Adventures because it is a seamless and easy way to learn how to sightread. Suzuki is used to enhance performance skills and learn traditional repertoire. I supplement with other sheet music on the side and teach scales and technical work additionally. For beginning voice students the majority of initial lessons are spent on technique and students are encouraged to apply it in whatever repertoire they enjoy with occasional assigned peices. My teaching philosophy can be described as 'one step at a time.' For me personally, some elements in my playing took a long time to develop, and nothing happenes overnight. I like to take elaborate steps with my students so that they have building blocks to continuously improve, while also ensuring them that progress is not always linear! I always like to hear how my students play in my first lesson to see what they know, and what they enjoy, and that helps me craft my plan to instruct them based on what they need and what they love! Instruments: Voice
My first experience with teaching voice started in my college days as a children choral class instructor (6- 7 years old) at Yip's Children Choral and Performing Arts Center, a reputable music learning centre in Hong Kong. After graduation, I taught at International Christian Quality Music Secondary and Primary School as an applied music teacher in voice, focusing on the one-on-one student teaching. I also have held community masterclasses for my church music group to teach and demonstrate the fundamentals of good singing. Read More

For young beginners of piano, I start with Edna Mae Burnam's Step By Step Book 1, as it begins right away with basic reading of notes and music. From there, I progress into the Faber Piano Adventures Series. Adults will start with the Alfred Adult Piano Course. Voice students are welcome to choose one song each cycle, while I choose two. It's important to me that they get to express themselves and what they like, while also learning new pieces for their repertoire. Read More
