As a teacher my goal is not to simply teach a student how to play or sing a certain song. My goal is to teach my students how to use the discipline of music to help them to develop their character. To that end I emphasize learning music fundamentals well and being able to put them into practice playing or singing in public at every opportunity. I am passionate about communicating through music and training others to achieve their full potential as a musician. I have served in twelve different churches over the years as a Minister of Music, and am still serving in that capacity. This has involved directing vocal choirs and ensembles of all ages, directing handbell and handchime choirs, and directing seasonal musicals and pageants. It was a lot of fun and I carry that same energy into lessons! I bring portable studio equipment and encourage students to complete whole works. I create my own custom lesson plans based on the needs and goals of each student. Usually, when a student first comes to my studio I listen to them sing a series of exercises and then a song so that I can get a good idea of where they are in their vocal development. I usually begin teaching fundamentals of breath and posture and resonant space in the first few lessons, but then build upon that with specific exercises and repertoire that fits each student's needs. During our lessons we will address correct breathing and posture and different vocalises that will strengthen and free up the voice, giving the student more power, more range and more freedom/agility.  Singing with freedom is a different path for each singer, and I will prescribe different exercises for each area of the voice we are trying to improve.  You will also be assigned songs: some classical, some musical theater and then whatever genre is your favorite.
