I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. I believe that each student needs to set their own goals and therefore I like to go at the pace my students prefer. While I am happy to help set some basic goals and will assign work to do outside of our lessons, I believe that long term goals are our own. My experience in teaching started when I was in undergraduate school fullfilling my vocal pedagogy requirements and was instantly drawn to it. I have always been selected to be the section leader in choir or the vocal coach in my casts and it has allowed me to better understand how we learn as musicians and Ive taken that with me into my own private studio. I would first establish the level of my student and figure out which direction suits them best to achieve there own personal goals. Someone first starting off , We would first concentrate on finger strength. Excercises that are fun but also help build the neccasary tools. Basic chords , scales , and basic strumming is a good example of where i would start a guitar student.
