I teach out of instructional books, notably books by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, and Alfred. Sometimes, I use sheet music print outs, or draft up my own exercises. I go back in forth in a non-conventional manner, adapting accordingly to the student's needs. I like to incorporate exercises and warm ups to improve and enchance technique. I also teach songs that the student would like to learn. I'm very patient and rarely rigid in my approach, although I do stick to a general routine that allows a focused approach to learning. For any student, I analyse what they want. It solely depends on the level of experience and the stylistic journey the student wants to go on. The basics of warm-up remain the same across all styles. It's the subtle changes internally that make the drastic changes which completely change a style. For children, I tend to start with basic and easy songs and we build from there. For adults, it solely depends on what they are looking for. Read More

I love to listen and play music very much, so I try to encourage independence in my students so that they can play what they enjoy and love. I encourage them to listen to how they play by playback recordings, humming to the tunes using their voice even when playing an instrument, so that they can listen and feel their own music. This will encourage them to increase their confidence during performance, lessen their fears and improve their motivation to be a better musicians in the future. Read More

I am a big believer in the breath. For a beginner I do a lot of exercises with breath connection to encourage healthy, connected singing. I like the idea that the voice dances on the breath and is buoyed and protected by that technique. I am also a very physical teacher, encouraging students to use their whole body in the act of singing. The voice is carried by the whole body and not just the muscles that are the vocal chords. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, where I taught students on the campus at CW Post College. I have consistently taught students in my home studio for the last 15 years. I am very encouraging for the students to practice as a key point in becoming a great musician. I also emphasis this for the younger students, because it helps the student's progress and to gain a passion for his or her instrument. Read More

I've been lucky enough to start teaching about three years ago under the mentor of my current voice teacher Kate Pazakis (she was taught by Liz Caplan) and I stick to her methodology pretty closely because I find that it is most relatable to the broadest group of students. I started teaching 3 years ago and the outcomes have been wonderously overwhelming! Seeing students grow and finally start to see themselves improve is a wonderful thing! Read More

For all my students, including vocalists, I always try to keep things enjoyable with mixed repertoire assignments. Even at beginner levels, I've seen some of my students cover the songs thattheywant to learn. I didn't learn to sing and play the piano by being forced to play songs I didn't enjoy as a listener. The key is finding music that is both challengingto create andfun as heck to perform. Specifically as a vocal teacher and overall vocal performance enthusiast, I rely on contemporary ear training as the key method to my teaching style. Read More
