Don’t be deterred by the thought of classical training techniques. The techniques and abilities I have developed did not hinder my ability to sing and perform other genres as one might assume. In fact, the opposite is true. The classical technique I teach helps the singer develop full control of his or her voice. This allows one to adjust one’s singing style appropriately to the genre at hand. Read More

My favorite thing about teaching is getting to discover how others learn. The approach I use for one student will not always work for another. I think every person has a unique learning style and I love to develop new ways to teach concepts to my students. Piano Lessons: For beginning students who are very young, I start with Bastien Piano Basics or Hal Leonard Essential Elements. For adults/teens, I use the KJOS Bastien book for adults or the upper level books by Hal Leonard. I also have my students play popular pieces or holiday pieces of their choosing in addition to their classical repertoire. Read More

Creative Exploration: While technique is important, I also encourage creative exploration and expression. I incorporate improvisation, composition, and exploration of various musical styles to foster students' creativity and musicality. Read More

A student must be comfortable enough to take the risks that are necessary to grow as a musician. Sometimes those risks will result in what seems to be a failure. I try to reinforce the idea that it is not a failure because you tried, what can we use from that experience to get closer to what you were trying to accomplish next time. Anyone willing to put in the effort and put their talent on display for correction and review is very brave and I honor that bravery. Read More

Music is a language! I teach music in a similar manner as we learn to speak. We learn to speak through trial and error having no wrong words and music should be taught in a similar fashion, where there are no wrong notes. We learn our speaking style, manner and/or accents by what we hear and this concept also applies to music; therefore listening is a crucial part for advancement and the pleasure of learning. Read More
