I still have that student and many more now and have a very high retention rate and am an upbeat, positive teacher that students enjoy coming back to. I slowly introduce repertoire that is appropriate and can highlight their strengths. For more advanced singers, I continue to build upon the foundational elements and guide my instructions based upon the student's interest and goals. Yes, I recognize this sounds a bit "out there" but my point is we need to focus less on good v. bad. Why not celebrate the gift of every sound we make? The work we create must have a purpose. I believe that students should be given a platform and support to create something beyond the traditional recital. My dream is for them to create works to take back to their own communities in order to foster and nurture dialogue to make an impact on social change. Read More
