A vital part of developing voice repertoire is exploring various interests and styles. I encourage all vocalists to choose songs that they will enjoy singing, but I will guide my students in exploring any realm otherwise not explored. I encourage healthy singing and practicing techniques that will ensure productive rehearsal without fear of vocal damage. A professor of mine used to always say, "there is no singing without acting", and I ensure that when a student sings a song, they will not only know how to sing properly, but they will also have a deep understanding of what they are singing about and how to convey the message. While there may be a select few who can find vocal freedom with minimal to no formal training, for the vast majority this is not the case. Therefore, in lessons I will provide vocalises (or vocal exercises) that will isolate ideas, strengthen and coordinate muscles, and create the foundation for efficient vocal functionality. A warm up I use to take care of this issue is asking the student to make a fire siren noise and I go up an octave (ex. do-do, re-re,mi-mi). In an adult I will ask the student to yawn (lifting the soft palate) and sigh at the same time. This is a very simple correction to make in students of all ages. As I teach students, I constantly change my approaches depending on the needs of my students. I encourage my students to practice and think about how to approach new materials to make it less frustrating for my students. In addition, I use familiar melodies which includes classical and modern selections to help support the learning.
