I have been teaching private lessons for about 15 years, as well as camps and workshops. I have served as a clinician and instructor at Drumline camps and with Orchestra. I created the Percussive Arts Institute of Ruston to bring music education to an underserved community and taught around 100 students in an after-school program. Teaching for 12 years and playing for 18 years has really inspired me to cater to every age, and the student’s personal goals and their particular culture as there are no limitations to my style. My method of teaching is tailored to each student. The first step is to assess the level of a student. Once that is accomplished, together we develop a plan that fits the needs and goals of that student. For beginning students who are children, I typically assign musical theater pieces that will develop their skill and technique but not be too daunting for early singers. In order to communicate musical ideas most effectively, I feel it is equally as essential to develop the students ear as well as their reading abilities.Each student will receive a personally customized work packet that includes sheet music, worksheets, and possibly audio/video samples. The packet implements training techniques exercises that will develop the students reading skills and ear-training, along with basic theory.The work packets also include sheet music to songs chosen by the students, in order allow them to apply their techniques in ways that are self-fulfilling.
