For beginner's, I do typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books. For intermediate, I'll evaluate what materials they've used thus far in their lessons and go from there. If someone is familiar with a set of books in a positive way, there's no reason to change the books they're using. I do believe, however, there is profit in a variety of repertoire, so a diverse lesson is key. I have learned from experience that simply learning one genre (classical, jazz, showtunes) is less desirable than having a familiar ear to multiple styles. Read More

I’m a recent college graduate with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. I started taking piano lessons when I was eight years old, and continued lessons through high school and for a few semesters in college. I started singing in choir when I was 10 years old, and have been in one or more choirs ever since! I was also able to cadet teach second grade music for my entire senior year. On top of the education classes that I was required to take in college, I began taking on a couple of voice students to jump start my career as a music teacher. I now teach fifth grade general music and I enjoy every second of it. I believe that learning should be fun and motivating in order to be successful and that is the biggest output that I would like for my voice students. Read More

I believe that practice is the most essential part of learning piano and so many lessons are spent teaching effective practicing techniques that will prevent disinterest or burnout from making music. While my teaching style is relaxed, I expect each student to always be doing their very best. I desire to work with the parent and student to create a curriculum and set of goals for the student based on their individual skill set and work ethic. Read More

My teaching experience has been with my church choir. I started out as the accompanist and helper. A year or so later I found myself in the conductor's seat. For two years I worked with my church's choir to bring out the best that they could be, and to bring joy to the congregation. Not only did I conduct the choir, but I was their accompanist as well. I tried to bring a mix of old and contemporary to the table because I believe being a well-rounded musician. Read More

Each student comes in with their own unique experience, ability level, and personality. So, while the overall structure of my lessons is going to be the same for everyone, it is vital that I set realistic goals for each student based on their own experience and individuality. Each student should be able to look back over the course of a year and pinpoint areas in which they have improved...having this conversation is one of the huge payoffs of teaching! Read More
