For beginning students, I introduce musical theatre and classical repertoire and the fundamentals of music theory. As the student progresses, I include advanced exercises used to strengthen the voice and have them learn various styles of singing based on their interests and career path. Students are expected to vocalize every day on their own and complete any homework or songs before assigned dates. For my students, I like to see what type of music they are interested in and listen to a few of their favorite songs. From there we can learn chords (guitar, piano) and melodies for vocal lines. We could go the route of learning scales and theory, but since I didn't grow up learning that way, I'd prefer to go the more modern way by learning strumming patterns, chords, inversions, melodies and harmonies, and teach dynamics to make a song come together. I know everyone learns  at different speeds so making sure they are comfortable yet challenging is important to me.Being able to know when the student is enjoying and not making it a chore is a key to helping and encouraging a student learn. Watching them progress in their insturment is rewarding in of itself and nothing is more satisfying. The methods have to suit the child and vice versa. I like to began all students by really getting to know their (and their parents') ability, history, desires, needs, wants, ect. I like to base my teaching pedagogy purely around the child, the family, and their learning skills. Everybody is different and it's my job to explore all avenues that the student wants to accomplish in their musical experience. I have a Bachelor's and studied voice and theater while I've also worked with artists of the Grammy award-winning Los Angeles Master Chorale. I am a passionate and intuitive teacher who loves working with students to find their true singing voice. My interest in singing began in community college. I watched my peers perform on stage, singing on top of orchestras without using a microphone or any type of amplification and it made me want to know what it took to be able to replicate that.
