Each student is usually at a different level. For beginning students we focus on breathing, how to make sound that is free and easy, pitch, rhythm, tone and simple sight reading and songs. I make my own lesson plans according to each student's needs. If you already have a good basic knowledge of singing then we move on to improving tone, range, musical knowledge, dynamics and whatever help the student may need with high notes, low notes, fixing the gap between head and chest, belting, or any other vocal challenge they might be facing. A vital part of developing voice repertoire is exploring various interests and styles. I encourage all vocalists to choose songs that they will enjoy singing, but I will guide my students in exploring any realm otherwise not explored. I encourage healthy singing and practicing techniques that will ensure productive rehearsal without fear of vocal damage. A professor of mine used to always say, "there is no singing without acting", and I ensure that when a student sings a song, they will not only know how to sing properly, but they will also have a deep understanding of what they are singing about and how to convey the message. I continued teaching through my undergraduate degree and loved it so much that I decided to make it a career and am now getting my advanced certificate in vocal pedagogy to further my knowledge and be the best voice teacher I can be. I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I will ask the student to sing through the piece, so that the student can make a connection with their own voice and with the music, followed by the student reading through the piece with their instrument. I like to send students home with one challenge every week, and a larger challenge for every month. Success feels good for any student, and short term goals that tie in to long term goals are a good way to keep feeling inspired and developing a drive to succeed.
