I use standard warm ups such as those based on Estelle Liebling, as well as more non traditional methods such as those in CoreSinging and the Funky n Fun series. I think students should want to practice for the joy of it, and so try to keep lessons fun and informative. I do believe in the importance of technique, however, and so try to encourage students to do short vocal exercises daily. I began teaching people how to play instruments when I was in high school, by teaching new students to the band how to play percussion. I then continued teaching once in college by volunteering at local high schools helping new students to the band programs learn brass and percussion. I build each lesson around the needs of each student and what they would like to accomplish. I help them set reasonable practice and achievement goals. If there is a style of music they would like to learn or a particular song, I try to fit it in with the lesson and use it as a teaching tool as well.
