I begin with students by asking their goals. Once I have a clear understanding of what results the student is looking for, I can then find ways to help them in achieving these goals. For instance, I always work with the student on warm-ups at the beginning of each lesson. Often times I will have a student do a bit of songwriting, maybe a couple lines - even though they didn't think that was an interest of theirs, but I've found that using many creative tools it allows for a student to hear THEIR own voice more clearly.
