Instruments: Drums
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I use several books in my teaching. It depends on the student and their level too. Some of the books I use are: Realistic Rock, The Fusion Drummer, Advanced Funk Studies, Styles Studies for the creative drummer, Stick Control, Advanced Techniques for the modern drummer, The All American Drummer-rudimental solos,
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I like most styles. Rock, Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Latin, Pop. I don't have one style that I like more than others or like to play more than others.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My first teacher obviously was the inspiration I needed to start playing the drums. A recent teacher of mine really opened the door for me and made me really focus on rhythm and technique which was something I wasn't as focused on in the beginning. He is one of the best players I've seen play on you tube.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Yes my grandfather played in the swing era in the 40's. He played the trumpet in a band back in the forties. He traveled around the country at that time.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
My main career was in Law Enforcement, and being a chef. However, my passion has always been in teaching. That's where my main focus is on now.
When will I start to see results?
If the student puts in the practice time, he or she will almost always see results! Reading notes is not usually hard, you just have to put in the time and effort to practice and reading comes in time.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Playing in bands and writing a published method book are a couple accomplishments I'm proud of. Doing recitals for my students and getting great reviews in the past are some other accomplishments.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
It is better to practice more often less hours than marathon sessions once a week. Example would be to practice 5 days a week for at least 30 to 45min vs. one day for 2 hrs. The student retains more this way. Practice with purpose. Have certain small goals that can be used to accomplish a larger goal.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If the child or student is showing an interest in drums try some lessons to see how it goes. You don't necessarily need a drum set at first. A practice pad is sufficient until a drum kit can be purchased. Most drummers get a practice pad anyway. Nearly all professional drummers use a practice pad. Over half of my learning was and still is on a pad!
