My teaching styles are ever-changing but first and foremost I strive to meet the student where they are at in their musical journey, work in small chunks and learn to love the act of learning. Timing, technique, tuning, dynamics, timbre, music theory, writing, recording, listening improvisation (and more) are all crucial to being a modern musician but the most important of these is fun. If you aren't enjoying my teaching then I am not doing my job correctly. Read More

For beginner students who are children, I start with Bastien Piano Basics. Once the students understand the music concepts properly, at the late beginner level I transition them to Nancy and Randall Faber's Piano Adventures. I firmly believe in establishing long term goals for which the class is being taught and developed. For beginner students who are children, I tend to lean into the music that they are more fond of listening to and develop an atmosphere of interest while using various colors, singing methods, rhymes that will grasp their attention and in the long run develop their ear. I have my students start with sufficient stretching to get the body ready for singing. Following that, I warm up their voices with different scales and specific singing exercises, which I will use independently with students in different levels. Afterwards, we work on the music. I usually pick the music for my students. However, if there is a piece of music that my student particularly wants to learn, I am willing to compromise as long as it is suitable for his/her voice. I meet the student where they are, intuiting their desires, fears, and needs. I believe the process of learning involves a step-by-step building of knowledge and skill, reinforcing previous accomplishments in order to be prepared for new developments. Therefore I create a plan for each lesson with specific goals of student achievement. At times however, even the most carefully prepared lesson can evolve into unexpected pathways. In that case I remain flexible and attuned to the present situation, providing guidance and encouragement to explore that which opens before us. Read More
