For beginner students who are children, I tend to lean into the music that they are more fond of listening to and develop an atmosphere of interest while using various colors, singing methods, rhymes that will grasp their attention and in the long run develop their ear. I want my students to succeed, so when I begin teaching a student, I pay attention to their personalities and observe methods that do and do not work for them. I ask a lot of questions and encourage them to ask questions and give feedback, and I try to make the environment comfortable so they feel comfortable doing so. I teach based on understanding. For brass instrumental students, I generally use the Rubank Method books, focusing on care of the instrument and basic fundamentals. For piano students I use a variety of different method books and am not tied down to any one series. We will also work on scales and the Hannon series For vocal students, I use a series of vocalises, scales and other exercises to strengthen the voice. We will then work on repetroire focusing on what the student would sing at a recital performance. Read More
