Nothing is more rewarding than seeing the growth of a student and their own delight as they become more successful with their craft. Taking the time to learn the "why" behind the desire to learn an instrument enables me, as the teacher, how to assess the speed at which students can progress. The desire and willingness of a student is paramount to a successful experience no matter the subject matter. Read More

For beginning level students of any age, I will begin lessons by going over basic fundamentals of sheet music reading (notation, connecting the instrument to the literature) and music theory that will aid them in accomplishing homework tasks independently. For experienced students, I will ask the student to demonstrate knowledge and playing to their best ability to obtain a better understanding of where to continue their studies. I will also ask all students what kind of music they are already studying and what else they would like to pick up from there (studying classical contemporary for school band with an interest in starting jazz music, etc.) I will always consider the students age and playing level to appropriately create lesson plans that will ensure growth over time. I emphasize proper breathing and healthy technique, especially for young singers whose voices have not yet matured. I like to give students an idea of what would be beneficial to them and then let them choose their own repertoire based on their musical preferences. I emphasize consistent practice but in a stress-free way. One of the most important things is for each student to feel that they are having fun in their learning and also learning things that are important to them. Read More

Apart from treating time as the precious resource it is (meaning I will give your time the utmost respect and expect the same from you) . . . my style is friendly, patient, and "open" to an extreme. If you have particular goals, communicate them to me, and I will teach you everything relevant to them. If you don't, I will help you identify your goals. If you want to remain "goal-free" (for example, because you used to have some forceful teacher, punishing you for your "lack of dedication" or the like), I have a blast simply looking into facets of music with a curious student. For my singers, I go by the music I have currently in my library that fits their voice type and genre and then move on. If they are percussionists I want an idea of where they are and what they are looking to accomplish. I have a variety of reps and books to use for them. And for my pianists, I only teach beginning piano students and i help them with basic fingerings and theory off of the Alfred Piano Book. Read More

For beginning voice students, I'll introduce them to the basics of singing, such as breath support, tone, etc. We'll start with some classical songs in order to cement good technique, and then branch out into the different types of music that the student would like to explore. For beginning piano/keyboard students, we'll begin with Piano Adventures Book 1 by Faber and progress through lesson books until the student is comfortable trying solo pieces. Read More
