Most of my instruction experience has been on-the-job teaching of my professional associates and bandmates as a Musical Director and bandmate. I have occasionally taught lessons during brief stints off of the road, but playing on the road has been my primary job for most of my adult life. For Piano students: I teach from Faber and Faber (age appropriate volumes) and encourage a disciplined home practice routine that includes a practice log and weekly goals. Solo pieces added over time. Performances - even if only an in home recital for a few family members and friends - are encouraged about once a semester. Even though all students require different needs, I will usually start my lessons by warming up the voice with different exercises. After that, I will work on repertoire with the student. My favorite book for beginning singers is the 24 Italian Songs Arias. A lot of good habits and technique can be learned through repertoire. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree on Vocal Performance, and am currently a second-year master's student pursuing a degree in Vocal Pedagagy. I am aspiring to be an educator in the realm of community outreach, to be on the opera stage, and to produce and record classical, childrens, Christian, jazz and ethno-cultural sacred music. Along with pursuing a career in teaching, I am pursuing positions in the fields of acting and voice-over work, including character voices, commercial singing, and advertising, I enjoy acting, storytelling, inspiring audiences of all ages, and artful expression by medium of the written word. They also have enjoyed the freedom of being able to tell me the sound they are wanting to make and receiving instruction how to make that sound, rather than being told they can only sing in a certain genre (usually classical) with a certain kind of sound (also usually classical).
