My biggest reward is seeing my students passionate about their voice, their instrument, their music. I focus a lot on understanding music from the piano so I feel very happy when they can demonstrate good musicianship skills in challenging settings. I find ways to hone in on technique through song choices, visualization, the lyrics/text, poetry. Asking why a student is attracted to a specific song, pointing out some patterns of why they may like it, talking through the emotions behind it, or what it brings up and layering those "performance qualities" with simple techniques. It is up to the student (and parent).  I like to keep the pace moving, but repeat as much as necessary to build a firm foundation. All levels of voice are welcome in my studio! For beginners I generally begin with giving the basics of how the voice functions and focus on breathing for singing. Then we ease into vocal exercises. After the first few lessons we move on to singing a simple song. I encourage the student to bring in music they like and would like to sing. I begin teaching every student with the same vocal exercises to strengthen the voice and then we discuss different styles and how the voice can change stylistically but not technically. Read More
