This freedom of vocal expression is built upon a few basic principles: an efficient breathing process, proper posture, coordinated bodily support, efficient phonation, and an open or relaxed throat. For all students, I begin with assignments from 24 Italian Art Songs to teach fundamental vocal technique and develop a classical sound. Depending on the student's interest, they will also be assigned musical theater pieces or art songs in varying languages as well. As a student's ability level goes up, they will be assigned more difficult repertoire as appropriate. I graduated from Coastal Carolina University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, with a concentration on music education. During my studies, I developed a love of folk music from around the world, and have found that it is a great teaching tool. During his time in school, Mike performed in a number of different groups. He has played in situations as varied as Orchestra, Big-band, African Drum Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Combo Jazz Groups, Gamelan Orchestra, Afro-Cuban Ensembles, and Mallet Ensembles. He also performed in freelance rock, jazz, jam, and improvisational groups. Mike began playing at age 7 on both piano and drums and started performing at age 14. I began teaching privately in the greater Milwaukee area in 2012. With my help and motivation, a fifth grader decided to keep his flute and play in his beginning band, despite his families' circumstances. Later, I picked up an interested eighth grader, who eventually received a Gold at regional solo contest and also made the all-state band.
