Depending on the level and age of the student we will spend anywhere from a third to half of the lesson working on vocal exercises, which will aid in the student's foundation of developing a strong technical background. I introduce double stop positioning, bar positions, forms for 12 bar and 1-4-5- chord patterns in different styles of music (this can range from Beethoven to Jimi Hendrix). I then move to introducing songs than have the same core chords, but in different sequences, so students can see broader applications. I also have an favorite tool of mine that especially helps with theory -- a wheel that has the circle of 5ths carved into it, with patterns and relations between the keys carved into an inner wheel on it as well. My methods are based on life experience from studying with different teachers through out my career and being an AMDA graduate. I am very old school, meaning I expect them to memorize lyrics and lines, and understand what they are saying and why. I approach teaching as a teacher who still performs,and learned by doing it. To summarize the above statement, part of my attitude and approach to teaching is that---while I certainly don't have anything against other beloved method books, such materials and such don't make you a better teacher. Over time, with a bit of studying, trial and error, the most experienced teacher will eventually come to appreciate and employ his/her own method without relying so heavily on any given editor or publisher to teach the students FOR you. By trying to find out what inspires each student, I can customize their instruction to help develop a passion for their instrument. Nothing is more rewarding to see a student enjoy and become a confident musician! I allow each student to move at their own pace, but always challenging them so they do not become bored. Each student will need a small notebook for each week's assignments as this communicates to the student and parent what expectations have been set for the next lesson. Read More
