I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun for the appropriate level(s). For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments.
