I approach teaching on an individual basis, meaning it's important to me to know the goals, hopes, passions, and if applicable, the worries or insecurities the student is feeling. In a first lesson I identify something that is special and unique about each student, and build their technique from this place. I find this helps the difficult areas feel a little less challenging because they already have something they feel proud of when working through the discomfort of something new or intimidating. Music is a great art form to express emotion and passion for something we cannot say in words. In church, I teach the choir to express their feelings of joyfulness when praising God. Outside church, I've taught privately in piano and voice for twelve years, five with Musika. I always encourge my students to practice with patience daily for 15-20 minutes in order to successfully progress. Most importantly, they must have fun, smile and play/sing with excitement. Many my students have improved their struggles through piano lessons. Each year we have our annual piano recital at the National Opera America Center. Students can learn and improve their skills through preparation and performing on stage at the beautiful recital hall. I have been teaching voice students from age 12 to adult. For beginner students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the students starts to understand the fundamentals, I begin to incorporate elements of beginner music theory. I do this because it allows the student to take to fundamentals and gives them the tools to get creative with the knowledge that they already have.
