I cater the lessons towards the individual needs of the students.  For beginning students 6 years old and under, I prefer to use Shirley Givens' books, "Adventures In Violinland", along with Suzuki materials through rote memorization.  When the student is 5 or 6 years old or older, I like to use Suzuki materials but supplement with note reading right away.  Also, I love it when a student brings a specific piece of music in that they would like to play, whether it is from the classical repertoire, or jazz, pop, etc. Read More

I began studying the recorder in Israel at the age of five. Keenly interested in music, I embarked on my lifelong love of the violin at age seven when I began violin studies with Leon Asa. After emigrating to the United States in 1958, I continued my early violin studies with the late Emily Cleve Gregerson of Omaha, Nebraska. In 1967, while an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, I was accepted as an advanced violin student by Elliot Golub, who was at the time a member of the Contemporary Chamber Players at the University of Chicago under Ralph Shapey, and a founder of the acclaimed Music of the Baroque series in Chicago. This book introduces the student to the instrument in the most practical way while making it fun, and it has the student reading music from the beginning, which I find very important.
