I am a passionate and motivated violin and viola instructor who teaches beginners through advanced students. I earned my Masters degree in Viola Performance from DePaul University in June 2017. I have been teaching at Music for Kids (a non-profit providing music at no cost to children in Chicago), and Music House School of Performing Arts. For my beginner students who are children, I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and sometimes Lee W. Kikuchi's Musicianship for Strings. Scales and arpeggios follow shortly after. As the student progresses, I follow up with Harvey S. Whistler's Introducing the Positions (this book can also work with adults). Etude books such as Wohlfahrt and Kreutzer come into play when the student is ready. As far as repertiore, I use the first few Suzuki books and Barber's "Soloists for Young Violinists" for my younger students (the latter can also work with adults). Read More

Typically with the younger students, I do like to incorporate a lot of games, challenges, and rewards to help them find their motivation. Lessons are mainly based on the Suzuki method but they are enhanced through extra skill building exercises specifically prescribed for each student. The student does not need to develop exceptional musicianship, but they are required enough interest in developing musical skills. Musical education is as important as developing math or language skills in developing the mental abilities in children.
