The Heartbeat Project brings violin education and concert experience to Najavo children on the reservation in New Mexico. The Joining Hands Project in Israel combined the teaching and performance of both Arabic and Jewish music to children of all backgrounds in Israel, with the purpose of spreading inclusion and celebration of differences. From all of my experiences, I most enjoy teaching. I find that spreading knowledge about something is easy and fun if you are passionate about it, and it has connected me so strongly with my students. Read More

Everyone has different expectations; some want to become proficient, while others want to become virtuosos, and I frame my lessons around the student's goals. The student is never talked down to or berated, and always encouraged; music is hard enough without negative comments. For beginning piano students who are children, I usually start with John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers To Play."  Once the student has progressed and becomes more familiar with reading the notes in both clefs, I will begin to introduce solo pieces of music that the child picks out of the choices I present to them.  I do this to help encourage and reward the child with their success.  For adult piano students, I find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly. My teaching style can most accurately be described as patient and creative. Music should be fun. The student should enjoy practicing.  It is my job to create a lesson plan that allows a student to progress steadily, without straining the limits of their abilities.
