I encourage my students to participate in recitals, competitions, and orchestra auditions to gain performance experience and to help motivate them to practice. I also find that performing can give students a sense of accomplishment and seeing their peers perform can be inspiring. I usually host two recitals yearly. For example, we may decide together that we will attempt to master a particular inspiring piece of music by a specific date. Naturally, the date will be reset depending upon the student's progress. I use traditional method for the students who like to pursue classical music and I teach modern music for those who are not so interested in classical music. Even though I use Suzuki method for violin, I emphasize sight reading and theory. For Suzuki students, I encourage them to memorize whole book and perform before move onto next level. Since graduating from college, I have continued with my private studio in additional to expanding my work with local public schools and youth choirs. Born in Washington D.C., I trained on violin in the Arlington area, starting with Suzuki and moving to more traditional classical studies, eventually composing and playing my own compositions starting in my early teens. I attended H.B. Woodlawn Secondary Program where I played in orchestras and numerous string ensembles, including [three?] years with the D.C. Youth Orchestra.
