I have created a curriculum which is comprised of the Suzuki series for Violin, the String Builder Series by Samuel Applebaum; the Introducing the Positions-Volumes I & 2 and Scale studies by Harvey S. Whistler. Music theory is taught using the Master Theory Series by Charles S.Peters and Paul Yoder. Additional Etudes that focus on Bowings, and Double Stops are taught to the more advanced student. In 2010, I founded the Hidden Treasure Project© dedicated to diversifying the established repertoire by the inclusion of lesser-known music. As a specialist of the music of the Caucasus, I not only performed but also lectured at the Wayne State University, Columbia University, Arizona State University, and the University of Alberta. Upon learning the basics of how to hold the violin and the bow is learning how to read music and sing music. Each student develops at their own pace. To improve quickly, practice is very necessary.  To improve slowly, lessons may be what guides your practice time. It is up to the student (and parent).  I like to keep the pace moving, but repeat as much as necessary to build a firm foundation. I usually start my violin students with Essential Elements books, and draw some technical points of beginning lessons from Suzuki method.  I like to start students on a real piece of music as soon as possible so they can get a sense of accomplishment sooner than later. For adults, I am more flexible and will ask what it is they would like to learn, then I will use many of the same beginning techniques tailored for their own musical goals. Read More
